One of the top 2026 quarterback recruits made a tough decision on Saturday. 5-star Brady Smigiel, hailing from Newbury Park, California, announced he'd join the Florida State Seminoles while on his unofficial visit. Let's dive into why Smigiel is choosing Florida State over Michigan, Ohio State, Washington, and Florida.
Brady Smigiel Commits to Mike Norvell, Florida State
Smigiel has talked about staying patient until he was ready to make his decision, and Norvell's Seminoles successfully sold him on a terrific coaching staff. He had visited all of the top programs over the last seven months, and his interest from Oregon, Ohio State, and others is quite telling about his prospects.
Blair Angulo of 247Sports first reported the decision.
"I'm huge on relationships. I know that being a quarterback, it's the quarterback coach, the head coach, the offensive coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach are the guys that you're hanging around the most. So just building connections with those guys," Smigiel had said in January.
"I feel like a great priority over there, for sure. I have been there multiple times and it's been awesome to be able to see what they are building. I think what coach Mike Norvell has done and continues to do is very impressive," he told 247Sports.
Brady Smigiel Recruiting Rankings
According to industry composite rankings, Smigiel is ranked as the 75th top prospect in the nation, the 5th among quarterbacks, and the 10th in the state of California for the class of 2026.
Brady Smigiel's Fit with Florida State Seminoles
The quarterback has impressive arm strength and is coming off an outstanding sophomore year, during which he threw for 4,222 yards and 52 touchdowns over 14 games. He's only two touchdown passes shy of reaching 100 in just 16 starts since the onset of his freshman year, making him an immensely productive addition for the Seminoles.
By the time he joins in Tallahassee, he could already have several records to his name.
With the commitment of Elite 11 Finalist Tramell Jones Jr. for the 2025 class and the notable signing of four-star recruit Luke Kromenhoek for the 2024 class, the quarterback lineup at Florida State is poised to be exceptionally strong. Smigiel brings a skill set that could make him a key competitor in that lineup shortly after his arrival on campus.
