FOXBORO, Mass. — In the last open practice before the first preseason game, the New England Patriots took the field prepared to battle it out.

And Mike Gesicki didn't disappoint, delivering what may be considered as the best play from training camp.

Gesicki had a one-handed grab in the end zone, jumping over multiple defenders including Jabrill Peppers and Myles Bryant. Gesicki made an insane effort to get both feet in bounds before falling to the side.

And Mac Jones, who threw the pass to the tight end, was very animated after the play, running into the end zone to celebrate with him.

If this is any indication of what fans might see from Gesicki this season, I think people should definitely be excited.

Here’s what else I saw from Tuesday's training camp session:

– It appears that many starters will not be playing in Thursday's game, with the backups seeming to be the focus during the first 11-on-11 period.

Deatrich Wise was also asked about whether he will play during the game, with him responding: “Even though I want to be playing, I don’t think I will."

-The Patriots signed Trey Flowers on Tuesday morning, with the new defensive end being assigned No. 58. While he was seen at the facility, he did not partake in practice, with Bill Belichick confirming that he won't be practicing with the team right away.

However, Flowers did come up to the field during the 11-on-11 team drills, watching from the sideline.

– TE Johnny Lumpkin was out of the red non-contact jersey, which might mean that the Patriots are expecting to see him on the field for the game. Marte Mapu is still in his red non-contact jersey.

-Kayshon Boutte was practicing punt returns alongside Marcus Jones, Demario Douglas, and Myles Bryant. This was the first time he has done this throughout training camp.

– Trent Brown returned for part of the 11-on-11 session, playing at left tackle. This came after he confirmed that he has been dealing with an injury.

– Bryce Baringer and Chad Ryland were the first on the field on Tuesday, with Bailey Zappe being the first quarterback out for the third day in a row.

– 1-on-1 Highlights

  • Tyquan Thornton beat Shaun Wade and Christian Gonzalez
  • Demario Douglas dominant campaign continued, beating Christian Gonzalez and Myles Bryant
    • Douglas is currently 7-0 in camp
  • DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne went 2-0, with Bourne beating Jack Jones both times.
  • Hunter Henry went 0-2
  • Matthew Judon participated, but Trent Brown sat out
  • David Andrews beat Christian Barmore.

-Following the 1-on-1s, cornerbacks were seen doing pushups, implying that the receivers won that round.

Quarterback Stats

Mac Jones: 10/13

Bailey Zappe: 3/4

Trace McSorley: 2/2

Malik Cunningham: 4/5

– Cunningham saw a lot of time at the position he played in college, and continues to show off his speed. Could mean that the Patriots plan on using him during Thursday's game.

Attendance

Out: CB Jonathan Jones, OL Cole Strange, RB/WR Ty Montgomery, OL Bill Murray, DL Trey Flowers

PUP: OL Mike Onwenu, S Cody Davis

NFI: OT Calvin Anderson

– Punter Corliss Waitman was late to practice

**Thursday Night's preseason game against the Houston Texans is set to kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
