The Florida Gators got some bad news on Monday when it was revealed that quarterback DJ Lagway was dealing with a calf injury and had his foot in a walking boot. Head coach Billy Napier spoke to the media on Tuesday about the injury and gave an update.

“We have a handful of players that are going to be modified, will be limited early in camp,” Napier said. He noted that Lagway would be one of them, adding Lagway and some others are “a little bit modified in our day to day as they’re in return to play. … We have [a] positive attitude where they’re headed and their opportunity to get back here shortly.”

“He’s day to day,” said Napier specifically about Lagway. “The good thing is that we’re about a week removed [from his latest injury]. In general, he’s made a lot of quick progress. But it will be something that we’re monitoring and hopefully as we go his ability to participate in practice will be a little bit more each opportunity that we get going forward.”

Being just day-to-day isn’t necessarily bad in the broad scope of things for the Gators. He will need to get out of the walking boot and show some improved mobility in order to get back onto the field. The tough part about the injury being to the calf is the potential ramification that can come with it.

If you don’t let the calf fully heal before returning to the field, that can lead to an injury to the Achilles tendon. Making sure Lagway is 100% healthy is the number one priority, and Napier is well aware of that.
