The LSU Tigers boast the most impressive offensive unit in the nation entering the 2025 season, but their defense is the key to winning. As Brian Kelly looks to make a deep College Football Playoff run, he’ll rely on a defense that only returns three key starters and is praying for Harold Perkins Jr. to be productive once again. The main cog on that side of the ball is linebacker Whit Weeks.
Weeks broke out in 2024, totaling 25 quarterback pressures, 82 tackles, 56 run stops, and one interception. The versatile linebacker is one of the more explosive presences in the nation, and he’s earned a spot on a prestigious preseason award watch list just before the season gets underway.
The Bronco Nagurski Trophy celebrates the nation’s most outstanding defensive player every year. The last LSU player to have won it was Glenn Dorsey in 2007 after he racked up 69 tackles and seven sacks. Dorsey went on to the NFL for a solid career as a pass-rushing presence.
Last year’s winner, South Carolina pass-rusher Kyle Kennard, totaled 11.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss last year. That somewhat sets the bar for Weeks, who will have his work cut out for him as an off-ball linebacker who is unlikely to get a ton of sacks or interceptions.
