On Tuesday afternoon, Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman entered in a prediction for Arizona State and head coach kenny Dillingham to make some noise in the 2027 class. Spiegelman thinks the Sun Devils are poised to land a commitment from 2027 four-star Weston Nielsen.

The Bastrop (Tex.) signal caller burst onto the scene in 2024 when he threw for 3,185 yards and 37 touchdowns during his sophomore season. Now, it would appear the heir apparent to Sam Leavitt might be joining Dillingham’s commitment column for the 2027 class.

Spiegelman is “bullish” on his pick and thinks ASU is set to land one of the premier throwers in the junior class.

For now, Sam Spiegelman believes Arizona State holds a lead over in-state TCU.

“From talking with sources close to this recruitment, I’ve grown bullish about where the Sun Devils are positioned in this one,” Spiegelman said. “Arizona State has a distinct edge over the Horned Frogs, who have been running second with Nielsen leading into his junior year.”

Spiegelman spoke with Nielsen recently about his interest in the Sun Devils program coming off a Big 12 title and a CFP quarterfinal run.

“I love Coach Dillingham. He’s awesome — and so is Coach Arroyo and the rest of the staff,” Nielsen told Rivals. “They have been amazing to me this past year. They have repeatedly told me that I am their No. 1 QB. They also took their time to individually talk to me about their program.”

If Arizona State and Kenny Dillingham can pull this off, it will be back-to-back blue chip quarterback classes.

“The touted passer has been on campus at Arizona State multiple times over the past year, including as recently as June, to throw for Dillingham and Marcus Arroyo,” Spiegelman said. “Dillingham has made a habit of bringing top Texas talent to Tempe. Blue-chipper Jake Fette is one of eight Texans committed to Arizona State in the current recruiting class.”

Nielsen is ranked as the No. 128 overall player in the 2027 cycle, per 247Sports rankings. He is the 10th-ranked quarterback and the No. 22 junior in the state of Texas.

247Sports’ analyst Gabe Brooks gives his scouting report on Weston Nielsen.

“Adequate height with a lean, wiry build that should be able to add more mass in the next couple of years. Strong athletic profile that includes respectable combine testing numbers, basketball participation, and promising track and field data, including a 6-2 high jump. Manages the pocket well. Good presence/awareness with the capability to make subtle, measured adjustments vs. late rushers to find space and deliver off-platform throws. Also a capable passer when rolling out. Displays good touch to multiple levels. Also shows above average velocity to the intermediate level, particularly over the middle of the field. Excellent passing production as a sophomore with more than 3,000 yards and a 37-7 TD-INT ratio. Functional runner who hasn’t been asked to carry significant volume in that category. Showed some lower-half tightness in passing drills during Spring 2025 live evaluation. May not possesses the high-end physical upside of some QB peers in the cycle. Nevertheless, a talented, highly competent quarterback prospect with high-floor effectiveness and the athletic profile to suggest some developmental potential. Projects as a P4-caliber QB who could become a quality multi-year starter.”
