Auburn Tigers are finally doing what they should have done a long time ago when it comes to Cam Newton
The Auburn Tigers are finally retiring Cam Newton’s jersey number.
You see players get their numbers retired all the time– guys who haven’t done anything but win some awards. So, for Cam Newton to not have his number retired yet by the Auburn Tigers, is kind of crazy.
Luckily, that’s about to change.
The greatest player in Auburn Tigers’ history, yes even better than Bo Jackson, is finally getting his number retired. Cam Newton won a Heisman Trophy with the Tigers, while also winning them a National Championship, their only National Championship in the history of that illustrious football program.
Cam Newton then went on to the NFL, where he was the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and became an NFL MVP in 2015. He took his team, the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately lost to a Denver Broncos team that was loaded. Cam Newton didn’t have the finish to his NFL career that he maybe would have liked, but he had one hell of a college career.
And finally, his number is retired, and no one will ever be able to wear the No. 2 jersey number again.
Auburn Tigers surprise Cam Newton with jersey number retire
The Auburn Tigers got Cam Newton in the building to surprise him. While he was filming an interview, he was surprised from behind, where he was then told that his jersey number would be retired.
“Thank you. I appreciate it. The truth of the matter is, no one knew, and honestly, I didn’t even know. I didn’t know the impact that Auburn would have on me, being a kid from Atlanta. No one knew the desire to really bring something to this town that will never be forgotten.”
Honestly, it’s about time. Newton won the 2011 BCS National Championship, and got drafted in the 2011 NFL Draft. As soon as he left, they could have retired his number, just like, for example, USC did with Caleb Williams the year after he left, and he did much less than Cam Newton did.
But, better late than never. This guy is deserving, and Auburn is going to go crazy when the ceremony happens.
