Mike Elko and Texas A&M Aggies have yet another reason to beat Notre Dame as top commit is visiting SEC rival school

Texas A&M recruiting could hinge on big moments against teams like Notre Dame

Head coach Mike Elko and his Texas A&M Aggies staff have the team’s recruiting efforts back where they need to be less than two years into his tenure. Elko brought in a top ten recruiting class this past year and now he’s on pace to lock in a top five group for 2026. However, Texas A&M clearly needs to keep proving that they’re worthy of those top recruits with their on-field play against elite competition. If they don’t, some top talents might start flipping elsewhere.

For instance, one of Texas A&M’s best recruits committed in their 2026 class right now is KJ Edwards–a top 50 overall player and running back from Texas. He is committed for now, but is still visiting a handful of blue blood schools this fall, including the LSU Tigers this weekend. A huge win against Notre Dame could go a long way towards keeping commits like him secured.

Five star RB KJ Edwards visiting SEC rival LSU Tigers this weekend

Texas A&M recruiting finished strong this summer, winning six commitments from highly coveted recruits in July alone. Elko and his staff now already have 27 talented recruits committed for their 2026 class with a handful of blue chip targets still out there and available that they may end up landing too. If the Aggies can continue building the offensive momentum they already have this fall with a win–or even extremely close game–against Notre Dame, that might be the secret to locking in a top five class for next spring.

Securing a top five class for 2026 likely begins and ends with retaining elite running back KJ Edwards. However, that might be difficult as he continues visiting SEC rivals this fall. This won’t likely be his last SEC stop, but Edwards will be in Baton Rouge to watch LSU take on Florida this weekend. If the Tigers defeat their rival Gators and A&M struggles, that might not be great for the Aggies.

Edwards committed to Texas A&M back in June, and at the time was the crowning offensive jewel of the entire Aggies class for 2026. Keeping him committed should be priority number one for Mike Elko and his staff on the recruiting front.

Yes, the Aggies still also have high four star Jonathan Hatton Jr. committed for 2026 as well, but given how much Texas A&M leans on their running backs it should be hugely important to keep Edwards.

Hopefully quarterback Marcel Reed and his newfound explosive success through the air can create some space against Notre Dame for the running backs to make some explosive plays this weekend against Notre Dame. If not, and A&M struggles, Aggies fans may want to keep an eye on Edwards’ commitment.
