There’s a long season ahead for the Buckeyes despite the nice start.

Ohio State is a 4-0 football team through five weeks of the college football season. In Week 5, the Buckeyes checked off a big box with a road win over the Washington Huskies in a tough environment. Washington’s 22-game win streak stood nothing to Ohio State and the Buckeyes walked away with a 24-6 win. It wasn’t perfect, the Buckeyes started slow, but they got going and looked like what a top team should to open conference play on the road.

The Buckeyes saw last year just how long the season really is with a 12-team College Football Playoff format. Ohio State didn’t play a Big Ten Championship game last season but it still took four postseason wins over major opponents to win it all. Buckeyes HC Ryan Day knows just how tough that road is and what it takes. Despite the nice start to the season, Ohio State has a long way to go

Ryan Day updates the status of where the Buckeyes are at

“We’re not where we need to be in terms of down the road,” Day stated. “I think we still got a lot of work to do in all areas, so we have to continue to work to get better, but you’re obviously seeing the potential of where we are. Each week, we’re going to have to continue to get better because in this conference,  that’s our first conference win, and we have a lot of work to do.”

Ohio State has Minnesota next at home and that’ll be a night game in Columbus, which doesn’t happen all that often in recent years, though it’ll be the second time this season already. After that, it’ll be a pair of road games at Illinois and Wisconsin before a week off to end October. When the Buckeyes start October they’ll host the Penn State Nittany Lions in a key game at home. A good start to the season is a step, but there’s a long way to go.

After having 14 players drafted from last year’s team, the Buckeyes have had a ton of new faces step up. I’ve written about it in multiple pieces since the Washington game, that’s why the matchup with the Huskies was so important. It wasn’t just at quarterback with Julian Sayin either, just about every position group had an example of a new player in terms of from last season stepping up. Saturday wasn’t just a road game for the Buckeyes, it was all the way across the United States and three hours back from the typical time zone. Ohio State is the No. 1 team and may be the best in the country and there’s still room to grow.
