Kirby Smart sends message to Georgia’s 5-star freshman Talyn Taylor after costly dropped pass in loss to Alabama
Kirby Smart showed Talyn Taylor nothing but love after his costly mistake.
The Georgia Bulldogs are 3-1 after falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide, 24-21, “Between the Hedges” on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs were plagued by mistakes throughout the game with one of the most costly coming late in the third quarter. Freshman wide receiver Talyn Taylor, a highly touted five-star recruit, dropped a potential go-ahead touchdown pass with Georgia trailing by six.
It was a tough moment for a young player under the spotlight, and while it’s not the kind of mistake you want to see, especially from someone with such high expectations, it’s still part of the growing pains that come with adjusting to the college game.

Naturally, growing pains require discipline, but Georgia head coach Kirby Smart understands it also involves showing players love and proving you’re not giving up on them.
“Yeah, you show confidence in them, you love on them, you discipline them, you grow them, you try to get them better,” Smart said. “Both those guys are talented players. Talyn will grow from it. He’s a tough, competitive kid. He practices his butt off.
“People don’t give him enough credit for how he’s changed our punt team in terms of replacing Arian and a Dom as a gunner and being really elite. And he’s, every time we’ve called his number, he’s answered it, and he’s going to continue to do that. I mean, the guy’s a worker. I told him that, ‘Look, we’re gonna come back at you and continue to use you and just keep getting better.’ That’s all you can do. Keep getting better. Block out the outside noise. I mean, I don’t even know what’s being said out there, because I’ve literally just shut it off. But both those kids are talented kids who are going to be good football players.”
Taylor’s next chance to prove himself will come in Week 6 when the Bulldogs (No.12) host unranked Kentucky at home this Saturday.
