Ohio State HC Ryan Day pops back up on list of potential NFL head coaches for the 2026 season
Probably not what Buckeye Nation wanted to hear not even five games into the season.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are off to as good a start as they could hope for after their national championship run last season. Ohio State wants to run it back like every team that has ever won it all, though that is easier said than done. So far this season, the No. 1 team in the country looks like it has what it takes to win it all again, even if there is a long season ahead.
Ohio State took care of business against the Texas Longhorns to open the season and that was a big test for the Buckeyes. Ryan Day is once again showing his quarterback development skills this year with second-year quarterback Julian Sayin at the helm. Sayin has been impressive for the Buckeyes in his first year as the starter. Every season that goes by at Ohio State the wonder is there if Day will jump to the NFL and that isn’t going away.
Ryan Day named to the possible NFL head coaching candidate list
Every year at A to Z Sports, a list of 25 potential head coaches for the NFL is released and Ohio State’s head coach finds himself on that list this season. Day is in his eighth season as the head coach in Columbus and has taken the Buckeyes to the national championship twice with one win to his resume. The former quarterbacks coach in the NFL would be a hot target as a head coach in the league if he gave it some real thought. For now, Day is focused on trying to build Ohio State into a dynasty, but the possibility exists that he will go back to the highest level.
Day is 74-10 as Ohio State’s head coach and four of those losses have come to Michigan with the other four coming in the postseason. The .881 win percentage is an impressive number and the best-case scenario worked out for Ohio State when they hired Day. Day was the quarterbacks coach in 2015 for the Philadelphia Eagles and held the same role in 2016 before becoming Ohio State’s co-offensive coordinator in 2017 and taking that role on fully in 2018.
As long as Day is in Columbus he’s going to be connected to the NFL, that’s just how it goes. The 46-year-old head coach has a son who is a junior in high school in the Columbus area and is a football recruit himself. If Day were to leave Ohio State, it’s hard to see that happening while RJ is still in school. The chance goes up that Day may leave Ohio State when his son is off to college, but that would even be a surprise to most in college given his age and success.
