John Mateer dressing out for the Oklahoma Sooners’ matchup vs. Kent State means more than fans will originally think
John Mateer was on the sideline helping the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kent State.
The Oklahoma Sooners played Kent State on Saturday, with backup quarterback Michael Hawkins playing the role of the starter. With John Mateer out with a thumb injury, we could see Hawkins against the Texas Longhorns next week, too.
However, Mateer did dress out on Saturday, wearing full pads, uniform, helmet, and everything else. Most fans won’t think much of that, but it actually reveals a great deal about the kind of leader, teammate, and quarterback that Mateer is.
Mateer is obviously devoted to helping the Sooners even after he leaves
There is a very good chance that after Mateer leaves this season, where he is a projected first-round pick, Hawkins stays and becomes the heir apparent to Mateer. If that were the case, you can tell that Mateer is the type of guy who, even though he’s only been at Oklahoma for one year, will always be a Sooner.
He comes off the same way guys like Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield come off, where they will continue to represent and help the program, even after they’re gone.
Mateer, being on the sideline dressed out, shows that just because he is hurt, he is still the same as everyone else. He is on the sideline acting as a second quarterbacks coach to Hawkins. He doesn’t have an ego where he thinks he deserves special treatment because of his hand injury, so he’s not going to sit on the sideline in comfortable clothes.
That’s the type of quarterback and leader you want, and frankly, that’s the type of face of your program you want, too. Let’s face it, too, he probably just wanted to wear the sweet throwback uniforms and didn’t want to miss out on a chance of wearing them since this is the only time this season they’ll wear them.
In all seriousness, his being in full uniform is huge for the morale and image of the team. The guy is missing a game, possibly two, where all attention is on his backup QB, and he’s trying to be just another guy on the sideline, and not stand out.
