Brent Venables immediately shuts down what everyone wants to know before the Sooners play Texas
Brent Venables was adamant that he doesn’t know anything about John Mateer and his recovery.
The Oklahoma Sooners play the Texas Longhorns this week, the biggest week in all of sports that’s not a championship. And, the Sooners could be without their starting quarterback, John Mateer.
“John [Mateer] is doing no good on good work,” head coach Brent Venables said as he interrupted the question being asked. “So, it’s Michael [Hawkins] and Whitt [Newbauer] right now. If something changes, I will let you know, but I think you have to do good on good, right?”
As things currently stand, backup quarterback Michael Hawkins is the guy to start vs. Texas. However, don’t count Mateer out just yet, as we know this guy has been pushing to play in this specific game since he got on campus. There’s no way he will miss this game if he has anything to say about it.
Mateer is pushing to play via reports
According to ESPN College Football Insider Pete Thamel, Mateer is pushing to play in this game, and there seems to be a belief that his return against Texas is very possible.
“There are steps he needs to follow in the recovery process, and he’s doing a really good job with it,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said on Tuesday.
For Monday’s practice, the Sooners moved it inside. Now, Venables said on Tuesday that it was because it was “almost 90 degrees outside, “however, they have practiced in much worse weather. While that statement is true, because it was just under 90 degrees, that’s not why they moved inside.
The Sooners want to keep everything under wraps surrounding who their QB will be, for as long as they can. I’m not saying something will happen, but years ago, before Venables was head coach, there was once an issue with students, or outsiders of the team, filming practice when they would practice outside. It feels to me like Venables doesn’t want to take any chances.
