How much is Billy Napier’s contract buyout? It will cost Florida Gators substantial amount if they fire its head coach
The Gators would be on the hook for a substantial amount of money
It’s been a difficult season for the Florida Gators. They sit at 2-4 under head coach Billy Napier and things aren’t getting better.
Going into the season, Napier ranks 24th in the nation with a salary of $7.22 million. It’s a substantial amount of money for a head coach in college football, but it’s also relatively low in the SEC, with five head coaches in the conference ranking in the top 10 in the country.
A high salary usually leads to a high buyout, as the Gators could be looking to move on from their head coach either during or after the season. If they choose to, it will be costly.
Details of Billy Napier’s contract buyout with the Florida Gators
In today’s world of college football, a buyout is expensive. The average contract for a college football head coach are close to fully guaranteed, and that is the same with Napier. If the Gators were to fire Napier, he would be owed a substantial amount of money.
According to the Gainesville Sun, he would be owed close to $21 million as part of his buyout.
“As of Dec. 1, 2025, if the school fires Napier without cause, he would be set to receive $20,428,333, which ranks as the No. 34 most expensive buyout out of the 105 USA TODAY’s could review and No. 12 in the Southeastern Conference.”
The Gators are used to paying buyouts over the last decade plus. When they fired Dan Mullen during the 2021 season, they were on the hook for $12 million. When they hired Napier, they had to make a major commitment to him and his vision for the program. It makes sense that the buyout is this large, but that doesn’t make it any easier for the program to absorb, especially with revenue sharing on the horizon.
If the Gators want to make it happen, they will have to find the money, which may have to come from boosters.
