Parity has never been bigger in college football than it is right now. And, that’s what we all wanted, right? Well, Florida State may be getting the worst of that. If you ask head coach Mike Norvell how they went from beating the Alabama Crimson Tide to losing four straight games, that’s basically what he would say.

“It’s college football,” Norvell told reporters Wednesday. “There’s great parity. Every team, if you give [them] opportunities, they’re all capable. It’s a weekly focus. Is your best going to show up? If you’re not able to execute to your best, if you’re not able to respond, if you have a bad play or a bad moment, anybody can give you challenges. I believe in this team. I believe in the talent we have and the way we will finish. I know what we’re capable of.”

That’s not exactly the answer that fans want to hear.

Mike Norvell coaching stats

  • Mike Norvell has an ACC record of 20–24
  • Has a 13–1 season in 2023, winning the ACC Championship
  • ACC Coach of the Year and Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year honors in 2023
  • Despite a strong 10–3 record in 2022, his 2024 season was a disappointing 2–10, marking FSU’s worst performance since 1974.

Mike Norvell is burying himself in a deeper hole

After the loss to Pitt at home, conversations started. After the loss to Stanford, things heated up real quick. Nearly the entire fan base wanted the Seminoles to fire Norvell. However, the Seminoles are sticking with head coach Mike Norvell, at least for the rest of the season. Reports are that the financial situation they would put themselves in is far too concerning to move on from Norvell, but he’s just not winning games.

For his sake, it doesn’t help that he is saying the same thing every single day. Every single time there is media availability, he is asked a tough question, one that, admittedly, coaches don’t want to be asked. And every single day, he is saying the same things.

Norvell’s comments are always something to do with how he cares even more than the fans do, just to let the fans know that he’s trying. And then when he is asked the one question that everyone wants to know, how the Seminoles went from beating Alabama, who looks unstoppable right now, to losing four straight games to pretty bad teams, or games they should win, outside of the loss to Miami.

No one wants to hear him say “It’s college football,” because no matter how much you think it is college football that is causing the parity we have today, extreme or weird losses are only supposed to happen every now and then, not four times in a row.

After a 2-10 season last year, it feels like the Seminoles are on that same exact path this season, but with one more win. And, sure, that’s improvement, but it’s just not enough for a historic football program like this one.
