Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin clears the air on his hilarious but controversial postgame antics following win over Oklahoma Sooners
Lane Kiffin shares exactly how and why his postgame spat with Oklahoma Sooners DL David Stone went down
Lane Kiffin was feeling a bit confident on Saturday following Ole Miss’ 34-26 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners and gave college football fans one of the most hilarious moments of the season to date when he got into a verbal spat with opposing defensive lineman David Stone.
As the viral moment began to spread, some took issue with Kiffin’s handling of the situation, but the Ole Miss head coach made sure to clear the air on exactly how and why things went down the way they did. Kiffin didn’t do anything wrong. Neither did Stone. It’s just football. Talk your trash when you can back it up. And that’s exactly what Kiffin did.
Lane Kiffin cleared up postgame situation with Oklahoma DL David Stone
In case you missed what happened (you can see the exchange in my post below), Kiffin said, “You’re a little quieter than you were before…This guy yelled at me during the game like five times about how great they were, and we can’t score on them.” Ole Miss could obviously score on the Sooners’ No. 1 defense, to the tune of 34 points.
After the game, Kiffin was asked about that moment, and although it was clearly in good fun on the field, he wanted to make sure fans understood how harmless a moment that really was:
“That’s just me. I mean, he was talking the whole game to me,” Kiffins said. “And I did a good job, I felt, of not talking back (he said with a smile). He just kept telling me that ‘we ain’t gonna score’ and all this. I didn’t go try to find him. He was just walking by and I saw him. So, that’s just kind of me. [David Stone]’s a great player, man. I’m sure he’s really enjoyable to coach.”
Stone truly is one of the best players on the Oklahoma Sooners’ defense. He’s used to being the one who can talk trash, considering how dominant the Oklahoma defense has been all year, but his luck ran out. Ole Miss and company destroyed the Sooners’ defense. So, of course, Kiffin decided to get the last word in. Why would we expect anything different?
Ole Miss scored double the points that any offense had managed against the Sooners (Texas made it to 23, but seven of those points came off a return touchdown). The Sooners entered Saturday’s action allowing just 213 yards of total offense per game, but the Rebels more than doubled that with 431.
So much for Oklahoma having the Ole Miss Rebels signals. That obviously wasn’t the case on Saturday. And now that the Rebels keep winning, Kiffin might just stay with Ole Miss long-term (instead of going to Florida). A huge win over Oklahoma and hilarious antics again from Kiffin. It’s just another week, business as usual for the Rebels.
