Ole Miss fans get more fuel to the ‘Lane Kiffin is staying’ fire amid latest from LSU Tigers organizational mess
Ole Miss fans should rest easy knowing that Lane Kiffin is almost certainly not going to LSU
The Ole Miss Rebels have now won 46 games in the last four and a half seasons under Lane Kiffin. It’s no wonder every college football program with a head coaching vacancy wants to steal him away. The Florida Gators have made it abundantly clear he’s priority number one. The LSU Tigers now will be chasing after him hard following the firing of Brian Kelly.
It’s quite likely Kiffin just stays at Ole Miss, but there continue to be rumors swirling about him leaving. However, based on what’s happened this week with LSU’s hot mess, more and more insiders continue to believe that if Kiffin goes anywhere it almost certainly won’t be to LSU.
Lane Kiffin not likely going to LSU after this week’s developments
The LSU Tigers have been an absolute mess for much of the Brian Kelly era. The high school recruiting fell off. They couldn’t win Week 1 non-conference games. The team lost six of their last 14 games. Now, immediately following the firing of Brian Kelly, they’ve parted ways with their athletic director, and the governor of Louisiana has gone out of his way to bash the handling of everything surrounding the program, and the very state of college football personnel management.
In fact, Governor Jeff Landry went as far as bashing Jimmy Sexton (Lane Kiffin’s agent, by the way) specifically, and the ridiculous nature of the current coaching contract landscape. Essentially, the governor believes that head coaches are getting overpaid and their buyouts are absurd. That’s not a great way to convince any new prospective head coaching candidate to come join your state school’s program.
Peter Burns of ESPN (along with several other college football insiders) are now convinced that Lane Kiffin is almost definitely not going to consider joining LSU now. Why join a program whose state government attempts to overreach and involve themselves in your contract situation? Why go to a program that may not actually hand out another big contract like Brian Kelly’s – which would be half the incentive to leave Ole Miss at all anyway?
Then on top of all the hot mess of organizational problems, the new interim athletic director doubled down on absurd expectations stating that, “LSU has to be in the playoffs every year.” The Tigers are doing an excellent job of making sure that absolutely no head coach wants to join them.
Kiffin can stay with Ole Miss, get everything he needs to compete at the highest levels, become a legend at a rising SEC program that doesn’t already have one at head coach, and keep his family in Oxford where he’s emphasized they all love very much. There’s absolutely no reason to go join the dumpster fire in Baton Rouge, and everyone seems to be catching up on that fact now.
