The Georgia Bulldogs are somehow 7-1 after needing wild late-game heroics to defeat Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Florida. Kirby Smart and company needed overtime against the Vols. A goal line fumble saved the Bulldogs from an early 17-point deficit against Auburn. They came back after allowing five straight touchdowns to Ole Miss. This week it was Florida’s turn to take a year or two of Georgia fans’ lives.

Still, when it mattered most, the Georgia Bulldogs did their thing yet again, winning 24-20 with a late touchdown to take the lead. And this time it was a Bulldogs star who was once committed to Florida who really won the day. Who is that player? It’s running back Chauncey Bowens.

Chauncey Bowens key stats in Georgia win over Florida

  • The second year Georgia Bulldogs running back Chauncey Bowens logged nine carries for 70 yards in the 24-20 win against the Florida Gators
  • Bowens ran in the go-ahead 36-yard touchdown that gave Georgia their late fourth quarter 24-20 lead.
  • Bowens converted the most critical third down of the game for Georgia with 2:56 remaining in the game, 3rd & 7, he ran for 14 yards

Chauncey Bowens won it for Georgia Bulldogs against Florida Gators

Just over two years ago, breakout Bulldogs running back Chauncey Bowens made a somewhat surprising announcement. Despite being from North Palm Beach Florida, and an early Gators commit, he decided to flip his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Who knew that just over two years later he would be the one to put the nail in the coffin for the Gators as he ran in a 36-yard game-winning touchdown? That’s exactly what went down on Saturday. Bowens hadn’t racked up a ton of stats prior to his fourth quarter score, but when it mattered most – just like he’s done often this season – he exploded past the line of scrimmage, surprising with his speed at feature back size for the long score.

This is now Bowens’ fifth game of the year with 56 yards or more. His fourth with a touchdown scored for the Georgia Bulldogs. He may not truly be the team’s RB1 with Nate Frazier now bouncing back from his fumble issues, but Bowens has been one of the most important offensive players of the year for Georgia.

It’s hard to tell if fellow Georgia Bulldogs running back Nate Frazier is having the season necessary to make the jump to the NFL this year, but even if he does leave it’s clear that the backfield is going to be in good hands for a while with Bowens. At 5’11”, 225 pounds Bowens consistently adds extra yards after contact with his size and strength, but also destroys angles and ankles with his surprising speed and agility. Hopefully coach Kirby Smart continues riding his hot hand when it matters most. It’s paid off most every time Bowens has been asked to win the day.
