If there is any team in the country that doesn’t need bad injury luck, it’s the Oklahoma Sooners. Last season, you could have blamed a ton of their issues on injuries alone. They were a bad football team in 2024, with the number of injuries they had not helping them at all. OU hasn’t had nearly the same kind or number of injuries this season, but it has dealt with some. They’ve been much more prepared for those injuries in depth.

On Saturday, the Sooners are due to play their biggest game of the season, and frankly, it’s not close. If Oklahoma beats the Alabama Crimson Tide, they pretty much have a guaranteed College Football Playoff spot. If OU loses, it will be nearly impossible to get in. So, they need all hands on deck, and it certainly doesn’t help that some of their best players are popping up on the first availability report of the week.

Sooners have important names on the first availability report

OU released its availability report on Wednesday, which will be updated daily until gameday. Wednesday’s is the first version, and it does not indicate whether a player is ruled out or playing. However, it will if the player’s injury is that bad. For example, Jacob Sexton and Troy Everett have pretty serious injuries and won’t be playing anytime soon, so they’re listed as OUT.

Star edge rusher R Mason Thomas is listed as questionable after he sustained a quad injury when returning a fumble for a touchdown against the Tennessee Volunteers.

Then, the unexpected news here is that Jayden Jackson, maybe the best all-around defensive tackle on the team, is all of a sudden listed as questionable. They could end up being without both, or one or the other, or even have both of them.

As for the Probable side of the availability report, there is wide receiver Keontez Lewis, who’s been banged up this season, but has still managed to play in a few games here and there. Then, linebacker Kobie McKinzie, who has been hurt over the last few weeks but still managed to play a bit, is probable. The bigger story is offensive tackle Derek Simmons, who was the best guy on the offensive line before the injury.

However, when he went down, true freshman Ryan Fodje slotted in at right tackle, and he’s been amazing for the Sooners. So, what direction do they go against an Alabama defensive line that’s super talented? Only time will tell.
