College football insider dishes on whether Lane Kiffin’s ex-wife Layla’s connection to Florida will play a role in final decision
Where will Lane Kiffin coach next season? Ole Miss? Florida? LSU? The NFL?
Ole Miss Rebels fans should be enjoying one of the best seasons in program history right now.
Instead, those fans are worried about whether Lane Kiffin will stick around in Oxford beyond the end of November.
Kiffin currently has the Rebels positioned to make a deep postseason run. He’s also, apparently, considering whether to leave Ole Miss to become the head coach at LSU or Florida.
The whole situation has resulted in a chaotic week in three SEC cities this week as fans in Oxford, Baton Rouge, and Gainesville all patiently impatiently wait for a decision from Kiffin.
College football insider dishes on whether Lane Kiffin’s ex-wife Layla’s connection to Florida will play a role in final decision
Plenty of folks in the media have suggested that Florida is the frontrunner to land Kiffin due to his ex-wife Layla’s connection to the Gators (she graduated from Florida and her dad, John Reaves, played for the Gators and was an assistant coach on Steve Spurrier’s staff from 1990 to 1994).
LouisianaSports.net’s Matt Moscona appeared on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning on Tuesday, however, and suggested that Layla’s Florida ties may not be as big of a factor in this decision as previously thought (Moscona broke the news that Layla was in Baton Rouge on Monday to tour the city).
“I have not personally spoken to Layla Kiffin to ask her that question (about Florida),” said Moscona. “I have asked people familiar with these conversations that very question. And the feeling is, generally, that even though she went to school there and her dad played quarterback there, that maybe isn’t the strongest attraction that people might think. I think that’s probably naive to assume that it plays no part. I mean, there has to be some emotional tie there, right?
“But I get the sense that there’s not a lot of family still there. So that part of it may not be the biggest deal. I think if I were a Florida fan or a Florida administrator, I would certainly be touting that and banging that drum. I think that has to play some factor, but I don’t think, necessarily, that’s the biggest factor, or even one of the deciding factors.”
There’s all kinds of stuff about Kiffin and his decision about his future flying around right now. It’s tough to know what’s legitimate, what’s exaggerated, and what’s just flat out made up.
It’s not what fans at Ole Miss, LSU, or Florida want to hear, but everyone is basically in wait-and-see mode with Kiffin until further notice.
