Latest Lane Kiffin news amid Florida Gators and LSU Tigers saga has Ole Miss and all SEC fans completely confused
Lane Kiffin meetings with Ole Miss, Florida, and allegedly LSU dominate this week of news, but there still isn’t any real answer.
The Lane Kiffin head coaching saga has been the most interesting story in all of college football this year. All the noise and tension are at an all-time high. Fans and media now (if we’re all honest) have virtually no idea what Lane Kiffin will do.
Will he stay at Ole Miss? Or will he leave for the LSU Tigers or Florida Gators? Kiffin continues to say the right things and shut down questions about other jobs whenever he’s put in front of a microphone, but then his actions and daily devotional tweets stir up more confusion every single day. The latest news in the last 24 hours has made things even more confusing.
Lane Kiffin meets with Ole Miss as Florida and LSU are in hot pursuit
After a week of message board madness, flight-tracking by fans, and alleged (and confirmed) trips to Gainesville and Baton Rouge by Kiffin’s family members, apparently, the Ole Miss head coach is meeting with Ole Miss on Friday, Nov. 21.
What does that meeting ultimately mean? Will this be the contract extension conversation? Will it be about his exit plan? That much has not been made clear, but the two parties are meeting around noon Friday, following the morning Rebels practice.
There may be some clarity that emerges immediately after that meeting, but given how this entire head-coaching saga has gone for Kiffin and Ole Miss, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for real answers.
To make things even more complicated, various reports of meetings with Florida and LSU continue to emerge, while private flights to and from Oxford flow back and forth between Baton Rouge and Gainesville. This has only added to the further speculation that Kiffin (or perhaps his family) is continuing to make plans for a possible move.
Florida Gators meet with Kiffin, and LSU flight speculation runs rampant
Earlier in the week, all eyes were on Kiffin’s alleged “family trip” to Baton Rouge via private jet. LSU had apparently flown Kiffin’s wife to town, and ever since that report circulated, SEC fans have been all over the flight tracking. However, then it was also reported by multiple sources (including Graham Hall of 247Sports) that the Gators met with Kiffin on Thursday to make one possibly final pitch to him as a likely decision looms soon.
It’s unclear, and there have been no verified reports on the details of Florida’s apparent meeting with Kiffin on Thursday. The flight-tracking of private flights in and out of Oxford on Friday only made things even more confusing.
Multiple outlets covering LSU (and fans on message boards) noted flights from Oxford to Louisiana on Friday. Obviously, Kiffin himself is not on those planes, considering he’s coaching Ole Miss at practice and is meeting with the Rebels’ leadership in Oxford, but this could, of course, be more of his family visiting LSU.
Then the most confusing flight activity of the day happened just before 10 a.m. CT. A private plane that left Baton Rouge for Oxford this morning was scheduled to return to Baton Rouge thereafter. Then, according to Wilson Alexander of The Advocate (in Baton Rouge), it redirected heading to Gainesville instead.
All of these meetings, all of these flights, and fans still have absolutely no idea what Kiffin will do. All interested parties are obviously trying to reach some point of closure and clarity as soon as possible. It’s clear that all three interested universities want to figure this out before a possible playoff run for Ole Miss, but when will that actually happen? It’s hard to tell, but with this flurry of activity on Ole Miss’ bye week, it seems that answers might actually be coming soon.
