Sooners QB John Mateer doesn’t have the information every Oklahoman wants to know after the win over Missouri
John Mateer and the Sooners beat the Tigers, but he doesn’t know anything about Thunder star Jalen Williams’ injury.
There aren’t usually many celebrities on the sidelines for Oklahoma Sooners games who aren’t from the state, but on Saturday, Dr. Steven Shin was in attendance. Shin was the doctor who performed surgery on quarterback John Mateer’s hand earlier in the year. He’s become something of a legend around Norman, Oklahoma, after performing a successful surgery on Mateer. Well, that and because he’s also the surgeon who performed wrist surgery on OKC Thunder forward Jalen Williams.
Mateer doesn’t have any intel on Williams’ injury update
If you’re an Oklahoman, it’s impossible not to know who Williams is. Okay, maybe it is possible. However, if you live in the Oklahoma City metro area, it is probably impossible, as he’s all over billboards everywhere around the metro.
The Sooners and Thunder’s fan base coincide with one another. Usually, if you’re a fan of one of them, you’re a fan of the other. Of course, a ton of OKC Thunder fans are also Oklahoma State fans, as well as international fans.
Williams won the NBA Finals with the OKC Thunder this past season, dropping 40 points in an NBA Finals game while having some ligaments torn in his shooting wrist, similar to how Mateer played amazingly with a broken thumb against the Auburn Tigers. He had surgery with Shin after the season and has yet to play this season. While the Thunder are doing fine without him with a current 16-1 record, fans still want to know when “J Dub,” as he’s called, will be back.
Mateer is close with Shin, but he doesn’t have any information on Williams, as he said after the game.
“Yeah, I knew he was coming,” Mateer said. “I had to keep it low-key. I didn’t want him to get bombarded. And he’s a great human, and I’m glad he could come.”
Sooners fans everywhere are hoping for an update soon, while also enjoying that their football team could very well be on the way to the College Football Playoff if they beat the LSU Tigers next week.
