Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been hard at work in Gainesville and New Orleans, preparing for the College Football Playoff with the Tulane Green Wave. The top priority for the Gators has been to assemble a talented coaching staff.

So far, Sumrall has hired offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, defensive coordinator Brad White, and defensive line coach Gerald Chatman. On Friday, reports surfaced that Sumrall has hired two coaches: Phil Trautwein to coach the offensive line from the Penn State Nittany Lions, and Brandon Harris to coach the defensive backs from the UCF Golden Knights.

It didn’t take Trautwein long to get to work recruiting. He was making calls right away to get top recruits to consider coming to Gainesville. The biggest one was five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, who got re-offered by Trautwein.

What’s interesting about how things have transpired with Trautwein is how recruits have been announcing their offers from the Gators. They are doing so with a picture of Trautwein playing left tackle for the Gators. On3’s Andy Staples claimed this is the first time that he’d seen a recruit do that.

The Gators have a long history of having talented offensive linemen, and Trautwein played with a few of them, including Mike and Maurkice Pouncey. His coaching and playing pedigree will land him a few top recruits. He’s also a good relationship builder, something Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong mentioned when talking about the offers Trautwein sent out.

Sumrall was serious when he said that he didn’t hire his friends, and that strategy is already making major headway with the recruiting class. The confidence in the next era of Gators football continues to grow exponentially, and it’s not likely to stop anytime soon.
