Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall dealt brutal blow with young star declaring his intentions to enter the transfer portal
Head coach Jon Sumrall couldn’t keep young edge rusher Jayden Woods from entering the transfer portal, dealing the Florida Gators a brutal blow.
Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has been doing a good job of keeping players in Gainesville, and one of the top targets to retain was edge rusher Jayden Woods. Monday morning dealt the Gators a tough blow, as reports surfaced that Woods will enter the transfer portal.
The defensive line suffered numerous injuries this year, allowing Woods to get serious playing time. He delivered in a big way, especially as the season went on, with 2.5 sacks and an interception against the Ole Miss Rebels.
Jayden Woods to enter the transfer portal
It’s a tough loss for the Gators. Fans and analysts alike viewed Woods as one of five players the Gators needed to retain this offseason:
- Quarterback DJ Lagway
- Running back Jadan Baugh
- Wide receiver Vernell Brown III
- Wide receiver Dallas Wilson
- Edge rusher Jayden Woods
The Gators retained Brown, who re-signed last week, but Lagway declared for the transfer portal three weeks ago. Losing two of the five key pieces for Sumrall is a tough blow to start his tenure. Even though Woods has entered, there is a world where Sumrall can flip him.
Over the weekend, Sumrall re-signed tight end Amir Jackson after he announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal. It was a big flip for Sumrall, and it shows that his recruiting chops are worthy of the Florida Gators.
Woods isn’t the first player on the defensive line to announce his intentions to leave, as defensive tackle Michai Boireau has already announced intentions to enter the portal, plus edge rusher Tyreak Sapp, edge rusher George Gumbs Jr., and defensive tackle Caleb Banks are entering the NFL Draft. There will be a lot of changes on that crucial unit for the Gators.
