The Ole Miss Rebels are heading to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, and if not for the foot of Lucas Carneiro that would have never happened.

Pete Golding and his staff called a heck of a game. Trinidad Chambliss played out of his mind and will forever be an Ole Miss legend for his unreal play that led to taking out Georgia. However, in the end, Lucas Carneiro won Ole Miss the game. After the playoff win, both coach Golding and Chambliss couldn’t help but share their confidence and talk up stud Rebels kicker.

Pete Golding suggests teams are already trying to steal Carneiro from Ole Miss

Lucas Carneiro went from little known special teamer on Western Kentucky to College Football Playoff savior in just a year’s time, and Pete Golding shared that he always believed in his kicker. Not only that, but even prior to the Ole Miss win over Georgia, Golding was apparently privy to other programs chasing after Carneiro’s special services:

“I think a lot of people think Lucas [Carneiro] is the best kicker in the country, so I’ve been meeting with Lucas a lot lately (he said with a chuckle, implying tampering from other programs). We’ve had a lot of good meetings here, and especially this week. I spent a lot of time with him one on one, just getting to know him a little bit more — what he wants in the future, and all that. We knew he was special when coach Schoonover was recruiting him last year. We felt like he was the best kicker in the country, coming out of Western Kentucky last year. He’s done an unbelievable job this year…he got his mulligans out on Friday, so he was ready to go. We’ve got all the confidence in the world with him.”

Other programs certainly won’t stop calling now after Carneiro nailed three kicks of 47, 55, and 56 yards in the biggest game of his life. However, based on the relationships and belief he already has with Ole Miss, it seems unlikely he’ll be looking to bounce any time soon.

Trinidad Chambliss never doubted Lucas Carneiro

Ole Miss’ star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss also couldn’t help but give credit where it was due with Carneiro. And despite Carneiro’s misses in preparations for the game, Chambliss and the team never doubted him:

“Yeah, Lucas [Carneiro]— we have all of our trust in Lucas. Like PG just said, during our “Fast Friday”, the day before the game, he went out there and missed two field goals. That’s very uncharacteristic of him. So, for him to hit the game-winning field goal, there was no doubt in our minds that he was going to be able to make that. We always have trust in Lucas. We believe in him.”

It’s moments like Carneiro’s game-winning kick that make college football so special. Carneiro is a hero, and will forever be considered so by the Ole Miss fans base. There’s still a couple more possible games here soon for Carneiro to further solidify his legend too. Rebels fans can rest easy knowing they have a special clutch kicker to believe in down the stretch in pursuit of a championship.
