Kirby Smart and Georgia Bulldogs add experienced transfer portal talent that should immediately bolster the 2026 defense
Georgia Bulldogs add Gentry Williams to add much-needed experience to Kirby Smart defense
The Georgia Bulldogs haven’t had the perfect transfer portal window, but they have added some significant talents at some critical positions. Kirby Smart and his staff have added a couple key offensive transfers like wide receiver Isiah Canion (from Georgia Tech) and running Dante Dowdell (from Kentucky), but it seems they’re mostly focused on stacking their 2026 defense via the portal.
Prior to Tuesday, Georgia had already added some defensive trenches help and three defensive backs. Now they’ve added even more to their defensive secondary. This time they’re stealing a defensive back away from an SEC rival with four years of experience.
Kirby Smart adds former Oklahoma Sooners cornerback Gentry Williams to Georgia Bulldogs
Kirby Smart’s defensive secondary may have lost Joenel Aguero, Adrian Maddox, Jaden Harris, and Daniel Harris, but it seems they have now officially replaced all of those players directly (and perhaps upgraded). Gentry Williams, a former Oklahoma Sooners cornerback who has been in college for four years now, announced on Tuesday that he’ll be joining the Georgia Bulldogs. He joins Khalil Barnes, Braylon Conley, and Ja’Marley Riddle as new secondary additions via the transfer portal for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Williams has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career (which is why he’s still eligible to play in year five removed from high school), but when he has seen the field he’s demonstrated that he certainly belongs as a starter at the highest levels of the sport. Williams has allowed a passer rating when targeted of just 57.1 (NFL rating system). He allowed just nine yards per reception on his six game sample last fall, and only allowed one explosive pass play all season long.
He isn’t an extremely highly rated transfer portal talent, but that’s mainly due to his lack of large sample healthy play. If Williams does stay healthy, he could turn into one of the best defenders on the entire Georgia Bulldogs team. Fans should be ecstatic about this acquisition, and confident in the Bulldogs’ 2026 outlook now that the staff has revamped the secondary entirely. Coach Smart is beginning to utilize the portal like a modern program and it should pay off on the field soon.
