The Oklahoma Sooners have a few more items to address before the transfer portal closes on Jan 16. This is the final date that players can enter the portal. So far, OU has lost around 28 players and brought in 13 through the portal, with 24 incoming freshmen. However, since most freshmen are unlikely to play, the team still needs experienced players at key positions to contribute immediately.

Given this situation, let’s break down the next steps the Sooners must take before the transfer portal closes on Jan. 16.

Sooners need several depth pieces at a few different positions

Wide receiver

The Sooners have lost eight wide receivers this offseason, seven to the transfer portal and one to the NFL Draft. They only have seven coming in right now, with three transfers in Trell Harris, Parker Livingston, and Mackenzie Alleyne, and four true freshmen. Since most freshmen aren’t ready for significant playing time, and some of the sophomores who were freshmen last season also won’t see the field much, OU needs at least one experienced wide receiver to give the position group stability.

They only need one more guy. They can get a depth piece in the portal, and they’ve already had interest in former App State WR Davion Dozier, and maybe the 6-4 WR can finish the position group out. OU also hosted a visit for Owasso WR Julius Wilson, who signed with Oklahoma State, but due to their coaching change, he is available to sign with another team.

However, they do need one more guy. If they don’t get one more, it’s not a huge deal because they do expect 2026 freshman Jayden Petit to be a contributor in 2026.

Tight end

OU has brought in Hayden Hansen, one of the best tight ends from the transfer portal. Then they followed that up by adding Rocky Beers. Those two guys should be TE1 and TE2, but they need more experienced players in the room.

How many they add all depends on how much they trust 2026 freshmen Tyler Ruxer and Ryder Mix. OU also has 2025 freshman Trynae Washington, a four-star recruit. Maybe he takes a huge step. Even with freshman potential, the Sooners still need at least one more tight end.

Offensive line

OU really needs some more OL depth. They’ve lost six to the transfer portal and are bringing in three. They’re bringing in Deacon Schmitt and Noah Best as the two freshmen OL. This position group has taken more injuries over the last three years than any other. They need to be ready with depth.

The starting unit is pretty much set, so they don’t really have to go find someone to start. They just need depth, and there are still some really good players remaining.
