Ohio State Buckeyes dealt more tough news just a day after they missed out on 5-star David Gabriel Georges to Tennessee
Ohio State has now missed out on another player they were in the mix for just a day after losing out on David Gabriel Georges. This time it’s the Indiana Hoosiers getting in the way.
Ohio State football took another recruiting hit on Thursday and the loss comes just one day after Ohio State missed on 2027 5-star running back David Gabriel Georges, who chose the Tennessee Volunteers.
The Buckeyes have now missed out on 2028 4-star quarterback Lukas Prock committed to the Indiana Hoosiers over the Buckeyes, Notre Dame, and Florida.
Prock, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound signal caller from New Jersey, is rated the No. 6 quarterback and No. 69 overall recruit in the class of 2028 per 247Sports composite rankings. Ohio State recently made Prock’s top five, and the Buckeyes had him circled as one of their top targets at the position in 2028.
Losing Prock to Indiana stings for a couple of reasons. The Hoosiers are a program Ohio State has to deal with in today’s era of college football, and Prock represents a win for Indiana’s quarterback pipeline. The Hoosiers have survived on transfer portal quarterbacks as of late, so landing a high-caliber recruit like Prock is a positive sign for their program’s trajectory.
Ohio State’s top quarterback target remains on the board
The Buckeyes still have their sights set on the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 class, Christopher Vargas. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound quarterback from Massachusetts camped at Ohio State this summer, and the Buckeyes would love to add him to the class.
There’s a chance Ohio State wasn’t going to take a quarterback commitment this early with Vargas still on the board as their top target. However, Prock coming off the board removes one fallback option if Vargas ends up choosing to play elsewhere.
Gabriel Georges loss looms much larger for 2027 class
Wednesday’s loss on Gabriel Georges was the much bigger blow. Ohio State pushed all of its chips in on the 5-star running back, who ultimately chose the Tennessee Volunteers over the Buckeyes and Ole Miss. Ohio State still holds a strong 2027 class with 18 commits and a few players left to pursue, but losing Gabriel Georges was the kind of miss that doesn’t happen often for the program.
Two straight days of recruiting losses aren’t ideal, but that’s the nature of the game during the summer. The Buckeyes will continue to build both classes, and how they respond over the coming couple of months will be telling.
