Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman has preached a line-driven approach since taking over the program.

The 2027 recruiting class, loaded with 5-star offensive and defensive linemen, proves he meant every word. With 11 commitments along the offensive and defensive lines, including four different 5-star recruits, Notre Dame football recruiting has reached a level that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

The offensive line haul

Under Freeman’s leadership and with the help of offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, Notre Dame has assembled a remarkable group up front on the offensive side.

The headliner is 5-star offensive lineman Albert Simien out of Louisiana, a prospect that both Texas A&M and LSU wanted in a big way. Plucking a player of that caliber out of SEC territory is a significant statement about where the program stands nationally.

Notre Dame also landed 5-star Olu Olubobola from New Jersey, a recruitment that didn’t pick up steam until February. The Irish were able to close that deal in just a few months, which speaks to the staff’s ability to sell the vision quickly and effectively.

The offensive line group doesn’t stop there. Top-100 offensive lineman James Halter out of Central Catholic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, adds even more talent. Jackson Hill from California and Notre Dame legacy recruit Richie Flanigan round out a deep and impressive haul.

The defensive line might be even better

If the offensive line group is impressive, the defensive line commitments may have been even better. New defensive line coach Charlie Partridge has wasted no time making his presence felt on the recruiting trail.

The crown jewel is 5-star Pennsylvania pass rusher Abraham Sesay, one of the twitchier and higher-upside edge rushers in the entire 2027 class. Notre Dame also went into its own backyard to secure a commitment from elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho, another 5-star talent. Top-100 Aidan O’Neil from New Jersey adds to what is becoming a loaded defensive line class.

Then there is Jackson Vaughn, who reclassified from the 2028 recruiting class to 2027 after being considered a potential 5-star in that cycle. Segun Alexander and Brayden Parks, a top-150 defensive tackle from the Chicagoland area, provide additional depth and upside to an already stacked group.

Freeman is abiding by his word

For several years under former head coach Brian Kelly, landing one or two 5-star recruits per class was considered a tremendous accomplishment. Freeman has shattered that ceiling. Four 5-star recruits along the offensive and defensive lines in a single class, plus multiple additional top-100 prospects on both sides of the ball, represents a dramatic shift in Notre Dame’s recruiting firepower.

What fans have loved about Freeman since he took over is his authenticity and how true he has been to his word. He told everyone at his initial press conference that Notre Dame was going to be a line-driven program. The 2027 class certainly proves that. These 11 commitments along the offensive and defensive lines have the opportunity to carry the proud tradition of Notre Dame football in the trenches.

This is a line-driven team, and based on what Freeman and his staff have put together, it will remain one for the foreseeable future.
