Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer hilariously made it very clear where he stands if one unfortunate situation happened
The Oklahoma Sooners have a very good bond and chemistry with one another, and John Mateer is showing that by picking Kip Lewis.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a pretty good bond and connection as they head into 2026. They’re a group that is extremely together and has some really good chemistry. And that’s what you need in this day and age of college football.
They are so close that QB John Mateer, with no hesitation, picked one specific teammate to help him in a tough situation. Not just any situation, one that could be unfortunate. But this hilarious encounter on SEC Media Days from the That SEC Podcast was great.
“Kip Lewis,” Mateer said when asked which teammate he’d want to have with him walking down a dark alley. And that’s not because there aren’t other guys. Kip during the week is chillin’. Kip on gameday? Different. It’s like, ‘Where did you come from?’ It’s awesome. Yeah, I love him, too.”
Okay, sure, that’s not the most serious question in the world, but it’s the offseason, and it’s fun. And, it does show that even two guys who play on opposite sides of the ball on this team, have a good relationship. Lewis is a captain, and he’s likely a guy causing a lot of havoc for Mateer at practice when the team does scrimmages. But, Mateer respects him. And, the answer is perfect–Kip Lewis is someone I’d want with me as well.
Kip Lewis’ 2026 season could be huge
It’s possible we see an All-American type of season from the Sooners senior linebacker in 2026. With 76 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and four sacks, I think everyone expects him to only be better in 2026. He will, or should, have a better team around him. The defense could be better, and the depth could be a bit worse which means they could ask Lewis and others to play more. Well, at least that’s the feeling for some going into camp.
Lewis is also going to have his running mate back next to him in Owen Heinecke. If Oklahoma can get a successful season with some success in the postseason, maybe Lewis could end up becoming a pretty high pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
