The Oklahoma Sooners have some good momentum in their pursuit of 2028 defensive lineman Dawson Jacobs.
The Oklahoma Sooners are positioning themselves as a serious contender for one of the best players in the 2028 recruiting class.
Defensive lineman Dawson Jacobs, a 6’3, 255-pound edge prospect out of Blessed Trinity Catholic in Roswell, Georgia, has Oklahoma on his radar. Jacobs is a 4-star recruit with a 90.71 composite rating, a top-100 player nationally according to ESPN, the No. 15 player at his position, and the No. 14 player in the state of Georgia.
The Sooners do not yet have an official visit from Jacobs, but they would love to get one on the books. Notre Dame leads the visit count with three, followed by Ohio State with two, and Tennessee, Georgia, and Clemson each with one. Those programs appear to be leading the way right now, but Oklahoma is firmly in the mix.
Rivals insider confirms OU is a priority suitor
Rivals insider Chad Simmons recently wrote that several programs wasted little time making Jacobs a priority, and Oklahoma is one of those teams. According to Simmons, Jacobs isn’t close to naming a favorite, but several programs have grabbed his attention through consistent communication and relationship building.
That is exactly where the Sooners thrive. Coach Brent Venables and his staff have built their recruiting identity around genuine relationships with prospects and their families. Miami, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oregon, Ohio State, and Texas A&M are all standing out early, according to Simmons.
Tennessee has a slight edge through defensive line coach Rodney Garner, who coached Jacobs’ father. But Oklahoma has its own advantage. The Sooners had the best defensive line in college football last season and could hold that distinction again this year. If that rings true, there is no reason Jacobs wouldn’t want to be part of what OU is building up front.
What Jacobs likes about Oklahoma
According to Simmons, the one thing Jacobs likes about Oklahoma is they really value the relationship piece of getting to know a recruit. They have great defensive line coaching, great defensive coaches overall, and they’re a great school.
Jacobs has said he isn’t allowing family ties to dictate his decisions, which could limit Tennessee’s advantage despite the Garner connection. Ohio State has earned the top spot on his list for reasons beyond his older brother playing there, with Jacobs saying the Buckeyes want to make you better on and off the football field.
Oregon is also among the programs drawing his attention. But Oklahoma is fighting for Jacobs, and the Sooners are not going to give up anytime soon.
OU’s defensive line pipeline makes them a natural fit
The 2028 class is still a ways off, and a lot can happen between now and signing day. But the Sooners’ trajectory along the defensive line makes them a natural destination for a prospect like Jacobs. OU has recruited some of the best edge rushers in the country over the last two recruiting classes, and the pipeline shows no signs of slowing down.
Jacobs is a premier edge prospect with the potential to keep filling out his frame and develop into a true defensive lineman. Whether his growth continues at a rapid rate or plateaus remains to be seen, but the talent is evident. He is going to be one of the more coveted and sought-after players in the 2028 class, and his recruitment could end up being very entertaining to watch.
