LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is going to be in a weird spot this fall.

Kiffin obviously wants to win as many games as possible — a national championship is always the goal at the start of the year for LSU regardless of who the coach is — but if the Tigers have a great season, it could create a nightmare scenario for the head coach.

One of Kiffin’s biggest wins of the offseason was bringing offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr to Baton Rouge and retaining Blake Baker as LSU’s defensive coordinator.

Kiffin is obviously the star of the show, but no head coach can do it all by himself. A great coaching staff is critical.

Weis and Baker are two of the best. But if the Tigers have a great season in 2026, both will likely be head coaching candidates.

On3’s Pete Nakos, in fact, named Weis and Baker this week as two of the top potential head coaching candidates for the next coaching cycle.

“The Tigers’ defensive coordinator decided to turn down the Tulane job this past offseason to stay in Baton Rouge on Lane Kiffin’s new staff,” wrote Nakos of Baker. “Viewed as one of the top defensive coordinators in the sport, he’s emerged as a head coaching candidate as he turned around the LSU defense.”

“Weis was one of the youngest offensive coordinators in the sport at FAU in 2018, but he’s grown into one of the top playcallers and will be a popular name in this carousel,” added Nakos.

Continuity in college football is as important as ever due to rosters that dramatically change year to year. The last thing Kiffin needs to deal with this offseason is having to hire two new coordinators.

Winning is always the goal, and no one will be upset about losing two coordinators if the Tigers make the College Football Playoff. But making the playoff and not winning it all could actually set LSU back going into Kiffin’s second season.
