One familiar Eagles training camp trend continues emerging under Vic Fangio, and it’s hard to ignore
The defense is dominating training camp as the unit tears through the offense again.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense is wrecking everything in its path at training camp, and honestly, is anyone surprised? Vic Fangio is running this unit like the savant he is. This is the man’s 5 millionth training camp (okay, slight exaggeration), but the point stands. He comes in, he knows how to set things up, he knows what to do on what day. He’s a pros’ pro. And the results are speaking for themselves.
Fangio talked about the Eagles’ practice and couldn’t help but let a little truth slip through the humor.
“We got the better of the offense by a long shot, but it’s been that way the last two years,” Fangio said.
Now, we know Vic is a jokester. He likes to have fun, especially at this point in his career and at his age, knowing this could be the last training camp he ever coaches. But there’s real substance behind the joke. This defense is ferocious, and with another year under Fangio’s belt as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, what can’t they do?
Fangio’s defense carried the Eagles last season
Think about what this group did last year. They held this team together while the offense never really got it going. Philadelphia’s defense was the backbone of everything, and all signs point to this unit being even better in 2026. The offense has been struggling in camp, but that’s not because they’re terrible. It’s because the defense is going to be that good.
Even Eagles running back Saquon Barkley can see it from the other side of the ball. Barkley talked about Fangio and what he’s witnessing every day at practice.
“He’s doing something crazy every single day, something new that might pop up later in the season,” Barkley said. “And you’ll be like, wow, I remember Vic doing that in training camp.”
Fangio isn’t just running drills and base concepts out there. He’s installing wrinkles, planting seeds for schemes that will show up in October and November when it matters most. The man is playing chess while everybody else is playing checkers, and the offensive players on his own team are the ones marveling at it.
I firmly believe we’re going to see an Eagles’ defense that mirrors what we saw last year, but even more so catering toward that 2024 blueprint. A top 1, 2, 3 defense in the league. There is no reason not to be. They have a couple of final spots to fill, specifically at safety, but Fangio has shown time and time again that he can make anything work. This guy knows players, he knows teams, he knows locker rooms. He knows it all like the back of his hand. It’s almost easy for Vic Fangio at this point. He can’t go out there and put the pads on and play, but he can put his players in the best situations possible. That’s what he continues to do. That’s the Vic Fangio special.
Jalen Carter wrecking camp and earning every dollar
And speaking of guys making noise, one player who is completely wrecking training camp right now is Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Fangio had some telling words about his star interior lineman.
“Jalen Carter is having a good camp,” Fangio said. “He’s doing the little things better. When you’re in good shape, the little things are done better. Really excited for what the possibilities are with him.”
That right there should get every Eagles fan excited. When Fangio talks about the “little things,” he’s talking about pad level, hand placement, effort on every snap. The stuff that separates good defensive tackles from dominant ones. And Carter is already earning every dollar of that contract. We need to see it carry over into the regular season and the playoffs, no question, but the motivation is clearly there. He wants to show why he earned that money, and from everything we’re hearing out of camp, he’s doing exactly that.
