Kyler Murray’s projection has both Nolan Teasley and Kevin O’Connell really excited about the Vikings’ 2026 season
When looking at the Minnesota Vikings’ 2026 season, the consistent element we have heard is Kyler Murray’s projection.
When the Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray, he was projected to win the starting job from then on. On Tuesday, that finally happened when head coach Kevin O’Connell named Murray the starting quarterback.
One thing that O’Connell mentioned about Murray being the starter was how the projection looked. “What jumped out is what could be. And at some point in this thing, knowing the timeline we had and knowing that we needed to do some sort of a projection based upon a lot of those things,” said O’Connell.
Nolan Teasley believes in Kyler Murray
While general manager Nolan Teasley wasn’t with the team when it came to signing Murray, which makes his thoughts on the situation all the more interesting. Talking to Rich Gannon on Sirius XM, he was very honest about his excitement.
“Really excited about what Kyler can do in this system with this level of coaching.”
That’s a really intriguing aspect of the entire conversation. The coaching staff, ownership, and facilities are a significant improvement to anything he had with the Arizona Cardinals. Not only were the surroundings better, but the scheme and talent are as well.
“You’re really excited about the direction that he can go and the intricacies of the system being a wide zone scheme that is going to implement some keepers and use his athleticism, get him outside of the pocket. That puts the defense in conflict. So yeah, just really excited about the direction that we’re headed,” Teasley continued.
It’s going to be a lot of fun watching Murray work with this offense over the course of the season, but he’s not the only player impacted. J.J. McCarthy was demoted from his spot as a starter, and impressed Teasley on how he handled it and what his future could look like.
“Really appreciative of the way that J.J. McCarthy handled the news this morning. He’s a professional. Really, really excited about his trajectory in the system as well, and you know it’s a competitive room. That was the goal from the outset, and so we’re still you know headed in that direction. But really excited about where we are today. And I think [co-host] Rich [Gannon] has a unique perspective on what it takes to to become a starter in the National Football League. I mean, the success that you had in Oakland later in your career. So it takes time. Everybody’s journey is different.”
Hopefully, the Vikings can get the best of both worlds: success from Murray and seeing McCarthy develop.
