Texas Tech showed plenty of fight against Houston but one major concern could question how serious a Big 12 threat the Red Raiders are
The Big 12’s best game of the season so far left more questions about the Red Raiders’ quarterback situation than answers.
Sometimes in life, the bad guys win. Texas Tech pulled off a comeback victory against the Houston Cougars Friday night to take a firm grip on the Big 12 Conference, and while I have to give the Red Raiders credit, I really hope we get a rematch of these two teams because that game was absolute cinema.
Back and forth, back and forth. It seemed like Texas Tech was looking for a way to lose by starting Tommy Castellanos, who so clearly is just not a good enough quarterback. He’s better with his legs than he is with his arm tenfold.
And I think Texas Tech, if they are the team that represents the Big 12 and goes to the college football playoff, they’re going to be the same story we saw last year, just a little bit worse. They’re not going to do anything if they make it.
I would much rather see a more fun story out of this conference. Give me Houston. Give me BYU. But Texas Tech? That’s not a team I’m excited to watch on that stage.
What does Texas Tech do at quarterback going forward?
I’m being way too harsh on the team that won the dang ball game. Congratulations to the Red Raiders. They are, as expected, one of the good teams in the Big 12. And Will Hammond played a solid game once he went out on the field to lead that comeback.
But the question that matters going forward is whether Texas Tech is going to continue using Castellanos as any version of a quarterback, or if he’s truly just going to be in for rushing plays only. You cannot trust him to throw the football. That interception was egregious.
And you may say, Tegan, they won the game, so why are you nitpicking? Because winning a close one against Houston on a Friday night is one thing. Taking that quarterback situation into the college football playoff is another thing entirely.
Texas Tech has the talent to be the Big 12’s representative, but if they can’t figure out the Castellanos problem and what to do with him at quarterback, it won’t matter.
And by the way, those blackout uniforms looked way better in the hype videos than they did in the game. Those looked terrible. I don’t know how you mess up a blackout uniform, but Texas Tech found a way. Egregiously bad. But, sure, congrats on the win.
And by the way, Conner Weigman is just an absolute gamer. If Houston can keep building on what Weigman showed in the second half of that game, a rematch in the Big 12 title game between these two teams is not out of the question.
