Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer and former Alabama running back Mark Ingram learned something this week that they didn’t previously know about LSU head coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin isn’t very good on the road against ranked opponents.

According to The Triple Option show host Rob Stone, Kiffin is 1-9 on the road against top 10 opponents and 2-19 on the road against top 25 opponents.

“We respect Lane Kiffin and the coach he is,” said Ingram. “But when you continuously do something, that’s who you are. And 1-9 on the road against top 10 teams, that is alarming. Because in order to be a great coach, you have to win these games — especially on the road and especially in the SEC. You’ve got a multitude of games on the road against top opponents, and if you can’t win these games in the SEC, LSU is not gonna be too happy.”

“When I look at 2-19 against top 25 teams, they’ve been keeping that quiet,” chimed in Meyer. “… That’s a strong enough ratio there that he’s got to self-evaluate what they do on the road.”

Kiffin certainly has to be better on the road against good teams if he’s going to bring a national championship back to Baton Rouge.

But at the same time, it’s not like many coaches have winning records against top 25 teams on the road. It’s incredibly difficult to win on the road — especially in the SEC.

So while it’s obviously not a stat that looks great on Kiffin, it’s not a death sentence for him as an elite coach, either. All he likely needs to do is win one of those games in a particular season to give his team a real chance to win a national championship.
