The Philadelphia Eagles have not gained a single first down on first-and-10 through the first two games of the season. They are the first team in 27 years to accomplish that dubious feat. And somehow, this team is 2-0. That fact alone shows how much quarterback Jalen Hurts has carried this offense in the early going.

The numbers are staggering

Look at the Eagles’ yards per play rankings by down, per the NFL. On first down, Philadelphia ranks 32nd. Dead last. On second down, they climb to 21st. And on third down? The Eagles are the best team in the entire league.

So everything, and I mean everything, has come on third down. Why? Because the Eagles try to run the ball on nearly every first down, they can’t run the ball because the offensive line isn’t holding up, and then they rely on Jalen Hurts to dig them out of a hole. And he does it. Every single time.

The opponents have been subpar, sure. Nobody is pretending these first two weeks featured a gauntlet of elite competition. But to not convert a single first down on first-and-10 across two full games is insane. That is a stat that should not exist in today’s NFL, and yet here we are.

Hurts is papering over a real crisis

The fact that Philadelphia is 2-0 right now is a miracle. It shows just how much Hurts has elevated this offense when the run game and the offensive line have given him almost nothing to work with. He has been the entire engine on third down, pulling this group out of impossible situations week after week.

But here’s the thing: this is not sustainable. Going forward, the first-down problem is a major, major red flag. You cannot keep spotting yourself second-and-long and third-and-long against better teams and expect Hurts to bail you out every possession. Eventually, a quality defense is going to make Philadelphia pay for putting itself behind the sticks on every single drive.

The offensive line has to get fixed. Simple as that. Whether it’s a schematic adjustment, personnel changes, or just guys playing better up front, the Eagles cannot keep operating like this. You’re not going to beat playoff-caliber teams when your first-down offense is the worst in football.

It’s mind-numbing to think about how much Hurts has had to do just to keep this offense functional, and the fact that Philadelphia sits at 2-0 despite all of it is genuinely nuts. But if the Eagles want to be more than a team that survives early-season cupcakes, something has to change up front. Hurts can only carry this group so far on third-down heroics alone.
