The 3 players who should be leading the Heisman race heading into Week 5
A trio of standouts have made an early but loud case for college football’s biggest individual prize.
The Heisman Trophy race is taking shape after four weeks of college football, and this year’s race is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining we’ve seen, with so many options. Despite it being incredibly difficult to narrow down the list of candidates, here are the three players I’d rank above the rest.
No. 3: Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor
Taylor has been nothing short of spectacular. Through four games, Taylor has thrown for 1,192 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just two interceptions while completing 69% of his passes. He’s also delivered multiple stellar performances against quality SEC opponents in Missouri and South Carolina.
The most important aspect of Taylor’s case is that he is elevating a team nobody expected to be good this year. He is otherworldly gifted, and he’s using those tools to make huge splash plays throughout games. This past week, he outlasted Missouri and Austin Simmons in their comeback attempt. Against South Carolina, Mississippi State rallied after a slow start to put up a ton of points.
Taylor is only going to get better. We’ve seen him improve week over week, and that trajectory makes him a legitimate Heisman contender with a lot of football left to play.
No. 2: Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith
We may be witnessing one of the greatest wide receiver seasons ever with Smith. He’s has hauled in 33 catches for 617 yards and seven touchdowns through four games.
What makes his case even more compelling is the context. Ohio State’s offense hasn’t been great outside of Smith. The Buckeyes still haven’t found a second big playmaker they can rely on if Smith has a down day.
The thing is, Jeremiah Smith hasn’t had a down day so far this year. He’s been the focal point of every opposing defense’s game plan, and nobody has found a way to slow him down. At this pace, it feels like we could see a 2,000-yard season.
No. 1: Florida RB Jadan Baugh
Baugh earns the top spot after his electric day against Ole Miss. He totaled 142 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns in the Gators’ 52-28 win. Similar to Taylor, nobody really thought Florida would be this good this quickly. The Gators still have some tests to pass, but the way Baugh has exploded over the past two games is incredibly notable.
Baugh hasn’t only racked up yardage against FCS and Group of Six opponents. He has 600 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, and two of his biggest games came against Auburn and Ole Miss. Those are legitimate SEC defenses, and Ball ran through both of them.
What Baugh is doing right now is very Derrick Henry-ish, and he deserves to lead this race. If he continues producing at this level against Florida’s remaining schedule, it will be difficult for anyone to take the Heisman from him.
