Could Jon Sumrall’s Florida Gators be the national champions this year? Well, it’s only four games in and it’s being discussed.

If I were to have told you when the Florida Gators hired Jon Sumrall to be their head coach on November 30th that national championship discussions wouldn’t just be happening, but they would be serious. Would you believe me?

I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t.

After a 4-0 start that has the Gators averaging 53.5 points per game, that’s where the national conversation is. Sumrall has been a revelation in Gainesville, and it has everyone talking.

Are the Florida Gators as good as 2019 LSU Tigers?

I know exactly what you’re thinking. Who in thier right mind would compare a 4-0 Gators team trying to rebuild back to being a blue blood program after the Billy Napier era? If you guessed Josh Pate, you’d be correct, and he did so on Bussin’ With The Boys.

“I think we’re on the precipice of one more week of that happening, and people go LSU 2019 on Florida. So people are going to make that comparison. Do you think Jon Sumrall’s down there looking at their performance so far and saying, ‘Man, we got issues, but we keep winning, and I’m trying to convince these guys we got issues, but as long as we keep winning, they’re not going to be convinced, and he’s waiting for the hiccup?’ Or do you think he’s just as all in as everyone else? And he’s like, ‘Dude, we’re going 16 and zero.’”

Now, comparing any team to arguably the best college football team in the history of the sport itself is a fools errant. Even so, are we trending in that direction?

The offense is scoring at a monstrous pace, including 48.0 points per game in SEC play, and the defense is getting it’s bearings together with the aggressive strategy from defensive coordinator Brad White. We know what Joe Burrow did with Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. Could the likes of Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III end up comparing to them once they get to the NFL?

We are still eons away from actually knowing if the Gators are this kind of legit or not, but the fact that it’s not brushed off as being completely absurd itself is a great signal about how things are going. Plus, it could mean another Heisman Trophy coming to Gainesville, and it might be Jadan Baugh’s turn.
