Alabama secures a major win at position of need following 2027 commitment from 4-star playmaker during an official visit
The Alabama Crimson Tide just held its first official visit weekend of the summer, and they came away with exactly the player the staff was hoping for following a commitment from a 4-star playmaker.
The Alabama Crimson Tide kicked off its official visits season with a bang this past weekend, securing the commitment of four-star running back Nigel Newkirk.
Newkirk was widely believed to be a member of Alabama’s 2027 recruiting class when all was said and done, with a decision coming in July. Instead, Newkirk pulled the trigger early, and his explanation as to why is good news for the rest of Alabama’s 2027 cycle.
Key 2027 Alabama commits
- QB Elijah Haven (5-star)
- QB Trent Seaborn (4-star)
- LB Kenneth Simon (4-star)
Nigel Newkirk explains why he committed to Alabama on OV weekend
“Before this visit, I planned to take his recruitment to July 1. By the end of the weekend, I knew there was no reason to wait. This whole visit gave me a different feeling. Before the visit, I was still expecting July 1. This weekend changed it,” Newkirk told Chad Simmons of On3.
“I am done,” Newkirk added when asked about upcoming visits. “Alabama separated itself for me. It’s more than football with them. They develop, and they’re going to win. Whatever it takes, they’re going to win.”
How Newkirk’s OV commitment helps Alabama
Let’s be honest, the Crimson Tide has been slow-playing the 2027 class, and it’s been intentional. Alabama has been picking its spots when it comes to recruits for the upcoming cycle, but there are still big fish out there like Monshun Sales for instance.
Well, if someone like Sales sees that Alabama has now added a pair of elite quarterbacks in Elijah Haven and Trent Seaborn, and now a running back via Newkirk, with more potential weapons on the way, it can start to make them wonder and realize that the Crimson Tide is building momentum.
That’s the importance of securing commitments over the course of an OV weekend, even if it felt like it was just a matter of time with Newkirk. With 5-star Elijah Crowell as part of the 2026 class and Newkirk making his intentions clear for 2027, Alabama’s backfield looks to be in good shape for years to come.
