The best wide receiver in the 2027 recruiting class has made his decision. 5-star wideout Monshun Sales, widely regarded as one of the top overall players in his class, chose the Indiana Hoosiers over the Alabama Crimson Tide and several other programs. The commitment sent shockwaves through the college football landscape, but the recruitment may not be as over as it appears on the surface.

Indiana went all in to keep Sales close to home

Sales plays his high school football in Indianapolis, and the Hoosiers made it a priority to keep one of the nation’s premier talents in their backyard. Indiana put together an NIL package that Sales and his family simply could not turn down. The truth is, this is what college football looks like today. Recruiting battles are won and lost on the business side of things, and the Hoosiers made the best pitch from a financial standpoint.

Alabama, for its part, believed it had a legitimate shot at landing Sales. The Crimson Tide likely would have been his second or third option when the process shook out. There was even the possibility of a hometown discount given Sales’ Alabama roots, and the Crimson Tide carry a much longer track record of developing NFL-ready wide receivers compared to Indiana, Rose Bowl victory or not. But the numbers told the story, and Sales made the best business decision available to him.

Why Alabama shouldn’t be counted out

Here is where things get particularly worth watching. None of these commitments carry real weight until National Signing Day. The early signing period falls in December, which means it comes after the majority of the 2026 season plays out. If Indiana takes a step back from what it accomplished in 2025, there is a real path for Sales to flip to Alabama before the pen hits the paper.

The Crimson Tide’s 2027 wide receiver room is already shaping up to be strong. Alabama flipped Auburn commit Cedric Simmons at receiver just last week, and Osani Gayles earned his fifth star ahead of his senior season. Adding Sales to that group would give the Crimson Tide one of the most talented receiving corps in recent recruiting memory.

The bottom line

Sales made the right call for himself and his family based on the information and offers in front of him right now. That is the reality of the NIL era. Programs that want elite talent have to pay for it, and Indiana was willing to go further than anyone else.

The question now is whether that commitment holds through the fall. If the Hoosiers stumble, Alabama will be waiting with open arms and a wide receiver pipeline that speaks for itself. This recruitment is far from finished.
