Jon Sumrall continues to prove why he was the right coach for the Florida Gators
After missing out on LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin, the Florida Gators couldn’t have gotten a better hire.
The Florida Gators hired Jon Sumrall as their head coach right after they finished the 2025 season with a win against the Florida State Seminoles. Since that time, Sumrall has drastically improved the morale among the fanbase.
At SEC Media days, Sumrall was the most popular head coach. His press conference was the most attended of all the head coaches, and he left with many having a more positive opinion of him. Who can blame them? Everything Sumrall exudes comes across as real and authentic.
Jon Sumrall believes the Gators can win now
One thing that has stood out with the discussion of the Gators is the disparity in how quickly people believe Sumrall will turn the program around. Sumrall made it clear that he thinks it will be this year.
“We can win, and we can win now. Like, I’m not real patient. I don’t really have an interest in figuring out how do we win in four years, like we did at my high school,” said Sumrall during an appearance on the SEC Network. “Now, sometimes it takes time to get it to exactly where you want it to be to build a championship-caliber program year in, year out. It doesn’t happen overnight. It takes longer to build it than it does for it to deteriorate. I think it can be torn down faster than it can be built, and so you have to fight every day for the little standards within your program.”
If there is anyone who will fight for standards, it’s Sumrall. He is nothing short of being authentic in everything he does. That has already translated well among analysts and the fanbase with near-complete buy-in.
Now, it was nearly the same with Billy Napier, and he never found a way to win on Saturdays. If Sumrall can start winning, that will be a huge factor in this discussion.
We are only five weeks away from the start of the Gators’ season, and it can’t come soon enough.
