We’ve seen a lot of changes within the Florida Gators since head coach Jon Sumrall took over the program. One of the biggest things has been the culture within the program.

Under Sumrall, there is a level of accountability and honesty that we haven’t seen in quite some time. He is not afraid to answer the tough questions and say anything to anyone. That mentality feels significantly different than that of Billy Napier, and it’s resonating across the board.

Jon Sumrall’s culture is impressive

On Monday, the Gators dropped their first depth chart, with multiple interesting tidbits, especially on the offensive line and defensive backfield. Releasing a depth chart could create issues within the locker room, but Sumrall’s approach helps prevent those issues.

“We’re really, really direct. I don’t hide things with our players. I’m brutally honest,” said Sumrall. “My wife would tell you that’s one of my greatest strengths and maybe one of my greatest weaknesses. I’m going to tell you the truth. If you like the truth, you’re going to love being around me. If you don’t like the truth, you’re going to hate being around me.

“Everybody on our depth chart, wherever they are, they know why. There’s no surprises. So we take things head-on. I think the players deserve that. They put in too much time and too much work to not have real conversations with them. You get what you earn in this game. You want to play more. Practice great. When you get your opportunities in games, if you want to play more after that, play good in the game, and you’ll get to play more.”

Honesty is the best policy, even if you don’t like it. That will resonate, not just with the players in the locker room, but also coaches on the high school level. Building relationships with those individuals is huge to maximize your recruiting ability. Little things matter, and the Gators have that with Sumrall.

That has already maximized the Gators’ recruiting class in 2027, and it will only help it get better.
