‘Not even close to throwing in the towel’ – LSU has a fight on its hands, but there’s still optimism that the Tigers will close the deal
Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers are in the midst of an intense recruiting battle.
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin’s top focus right now is on beating Ole Miss this weekend.
Then next week, his focus will be on beating Texas A&M.
Going 1-0 each week is obviously Kiffin’s top objective this fall, but it’s far from the only thing on his plate.
Recruiting, of course, is a 24/7/365 job.
And Kiffin is currently chasing one of the top recruits in the nation — 2027 five-star wide receiver Eason Royal, who has been committed to Texas since last November.
Most folks expect Royal, who is from New Orleans, to eventually flip to LSU.
But after the Longhorns’ big win over Ohio State last weekend — which Royal was in attendance for — it’s not certain that the five-star wide receiver will end up at LSU.
“I’ve talked to sources in Baton Rouge who have a sense of confidence, but nobody in Austin is even close to throwing in the towel,” noted Horns247’s Jason Suchomel this week. “As it stands right now, I would paint Texas’ viewpoint as cautiously optimistic, with the understanding that this one still has some twists and turns in the coming weeks and months.
“With this incredible victory over Ohio State, I believe Texas greatly helped its chances of keeping Royal committed,” said 247Sports’ Tom Loy. “The atmosphere, environment, and overall experience were a clear eye-opener for the elite talent. However, from everyone I’ve spoken with behind the scenes, both before and after this come-from-behind win, there is still a ton of confidence coming from LSU.”
It seems the general feeling is still that LSU will end up winning this battle, but Texas sounds desperate to keep Royal. And desperate teams can do desperate things to keep a commit.
This likely won’t be decided until Royal puts pen to paper during the early signing period, so there’s still a couple of months’ worth of twists and turns ahead.
