Notre Dame football is set to kick off its official visitor season this weekend. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish will host a long list of extremely important 2027 recruiting targets. The bulk of them will be on the defensive side of the football.

While he won’t be on campus until June 19-21, Notre Dame is also about to enter a make-or-break stretch for elite Tampa Bay (Fla.) Jesuit linebacker Kaden Henderson. The star defender is coming off an official visit to Texas A&M this past weekend, and the Aggies have long been considered to be the frontrunners for Henderson.

Notre Dame and Miami have been in that next group, trying to upend the Aggies.

In a recruiting update from Rivals analyst Steve Wiltfong, he spoke about Texas A&M’s standing coming off that trip. He also mentioned Notre Dame as “the biggest competition” for Henderson, which makes the timing of his official visit extremely interesting. That’s especially true since Henderson has his commitment date scheduled for July 1st.

As things currently stand, Notre Dame holds a commitment from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Amarri Irvin, although he’s coming off a recent official visit to Michigan State. The Irish staff will have to keep Irvin in the class, but on top of that, trying to close on Henderson is extremely important.

With how well Notre Dame has closed during official visit weekends over the last two years, there’s always reason for optimism that Freeman and Co. can close things out. The fact that the Irish program also has the final official visit before Henderson’s commitment date could also be huge. That will make the next couple of weeks vitally important.

Kaden Henderson’s recruiting background

Henderson is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms currently. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Henderson is rated as a five-star, the No. 24 overall player, the No. 1 linebacker, and the No. 3 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class right now. He has been one of the biggest risers in the class over the offseason.

While his recruiting rankings are elite, Henderson’s offer list might be even better. With over 40 offers already, Henderson is not without a long list of impressive options. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, USC, Clemson, Miami, Auburn, Florida State, Missouri, South Carolina, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, SMU, Wisconsin, Pitt, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Baylor, UNC, Syracuse, UCF, Duke, and Kansas, among others.

Despite missing some time as a junior, Henderson was able to make his impact known on the Jesuit defense. In 10 games, the 6-1.5, 218-pound defender managed to collect 49 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and nine sacks. Henderson added another 20 quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a blocked punt.
