Now former Ohio State QB Will Howard is set to embark on his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After helping lead the Buckeyes to a National Championship, Howard was taken in the sixth round by the Steelers last weekend. Howard was expected to go a bit earlier in the draft but was able to return home to Pennsylvania in the end.
Now with the Steelers, Howard is set to be depth for at least the 2025 season. Former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger recently offered some advice for the former Buckeye.
“He needs to understand, and I would tell him this, you don't have pressure bud,” Roethlisberger said. “You're a sixth-rounder. There's no pressure. He should go into this thing with like, ‘I can play free. I have no pressure’.”
The Steelers are expected to sign veteran QB Aaron Rodgers at some point, it is just a matter of when. Mason Rudolph was signed to be the backup and Howard will likely fill in as QB3. It is no lock that Howard makes the team, though he should in the end.
Five years of college football benefits Howard and he has the football IQ to step into an NFL locker room and help the team. Howard’s ability to be a strong leader is something you want in your quarterback.
“He should come in here with the mindset of this is my job. I want to be the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the next 15, 18, 20 years. That should be his mentality,” Roethlisberger explained. “Now I hope and I would tell him to do it the right way.”
The idea of sitting behind Rodgers for a year and watching how he goes about the game should only be a positive for Howard. The 6-foot-4 quarterback isn’t going to see real snaps in 2025 but he has a chance to develop into the guy for Pittsburgh.
