Hiring the right offensive coordinator doesn’t always yield the desired results. The Oklahoma Sooners went through that experience last year, when they hired Seth Littrell and fired him in the same season. But they have gotten it right with Ben Arbuckle, as the young OC is already garnering interest for HC jobs around the country.

“I’m flattered that someone would say that to me, but none of that registers in my head… I haven’t thought about being a head coach, and I’m not seeking anything, either… My responsibility is to these kids and Oklahoma,” Arbuckle told reporters on Tuesday when asked about the attention he’s received.

He hasn’t quite deserved a top HC gig yet, but he is well on his way. And it may be in his best interest to continue doing what he is doing for another year or two before taking a head coaching job.

Sooners could lose Ben Arbuckle to a head coach job in the near future

The offense doesn’t look otherworldly at the moment, but there are several factors at play. And, the offense is still worlds better than last year, with many of the same pieces and some new additions. Now, the run game still needs some work, but that is just as much a health thing as anything else.

The pass game, though, looks amazing. Arbuckle has been cooking in that aspect with John Mateer. So, if the offense isn’t exceptionally good, why is Arbuckle being considered for jobs or having his name mentioned? Well, the cool thing to do in this new era of college football is to hire the bright young football mind. Arbuckle matches all of the descriptors you want in an HC, a young one at that.

If an opportunity were presented to him this offseason, he should stay at Oklahoma a few more years, or maybe just one more year. When he can string together some great years of offensive football, then he will get the pick of the litter when it comes to HC jobs. When he leaves this year, it could end up being a school in a horrible situation, like Arkansas or Oklahoma State – a school with little to no resources that has just lost all of its recruits.

Then again, that type of challenge, paired with that type of money he will likely get, could be something that entices him. Either way, Arbuckle has a bright future ahead. It’s clear head coach Brent Venables made the right decision to hire him, as Arbuckle turned around the offense and brought Mateer with him, in a way.
