I don’t often like to think of myself as old, but sometimes, the sports world makes that call for me. One of those moments is right now, as the Oklahoma Sooners are pushing hard to land the commitment of 2027 Liberty Christian linebacker Cooper Witten, the son of longtime NFL standout Dallas Cowboy and likely Hall of Famer Jason Witten. Witten is the number-one linebacker in the 2027 class, and a consensus top-20 player.

Cooper Witten has visited the Sooners numerous times, and has built up a strong rapport with head coach Brent Venables, who has established an elite pipeline of linebacker play and has sent several ‘backers into the NFL.

If Oklahoma can pull off his recruitment, the Sooners will have beaten out his dad’s school, the Tennessee Volunteers, as well as another strong SEC candidate in the Texas A&M Aggies to secure the commitment of an elite playmaker who could be the leader of the defense for the foreseeable future.

Cooper Witten Could Put Firm Stamp on Oklahoma’s Top 2027 Class

Don’t look now, but the Oklahoma Sooners and Brent Venables have built the number-one recruiting class in 2027, securing several high-powered commitments on the offensive side of the ball. However, the Sooners have yet to bring in an elite defensive recruit into the fray of that class, something that Witten could change.

In fact, Witten could snap somewhat of a cold streak for the Sooners. After bringing in five stars like PJ Adebawore and David Stone in Venables’ first few recruiting classes, Oklahoma hasn’t had a single five-star recruit defensively since. Witten, the #1 linebacker and top-20 player in the 2027 class, is almost certainly set to earn that coveted five-star status soon.

Should he decide to join the Sooners, Witten would be their first five-star linebacker in school history and highest-ranked linebacker recruit since Caleb Kelly in the class of 2016.

There is obviously plenty of time until Witten makes his decision as a 2027 recruit, and plenty could change in that time. However, the Sooners are making a strong push and have firmly placed themselves at the top of his recruiting considerations. With how heavy Oklahoma is pushing to nail the 2027 class, Witten would be a coveted cherry on top for what could be the Sooners’ best class in years.
