The Oklahoma Sooners are on the brink of landing their biggest transfer portal player, a guy that they desperately need. John Mateer, the best quarterback in this portal class, has a connection with the Sooners' newest offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. That is the biggest reason the former Washington State quarterback is being linked to the Sooners.
And, as far as we are all concerned, he will likely end up playing in Norman, as he probably wants to play for the guy who led him to his best career year yet. But, there's competition in the Mateer sweepstakes.
The Sooners are not the only team that Mateer is interested in. If you remember correctly, last season, Mateer was a backup quarterback at Washington State. He played backup to Cam Ward, who transferred to the Miami Hurricanes. Now, the Hurricanes want Mateer.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, the Sooners have competition, as Miami has officially been added as another team Mateer could transfer to.
The Sooners need him, badly, probably much worse than Miami needs him.
