Sooners 2027 commit Jaylen Scott just gave the entire fan base a sneak peek of what’s to come when he gets on campus
The Oklahoma Sooners have to be excited for what’s to come with Jaylen Scott, the 2027 safety committed to OU.
The Oklahoma Sooners have two of the best safeties in the 2027 recruiting class committed to their program in Jaylen Scott and Bode Sparrow. We already saw what Sparrow did Friday night in his high school football game, but Scott made some noise too.
The Mobile, Alabama, native playing at Williamson High School had some outlandish plays and brought the boom on a few tackles. Over the last two seasons, Scott has racked up 212 tackles and showed why he’s such a violent downhill defender from the secondary. He also knows how to cover, but a lot of people seem to forget this guy can tackle.
There were a few plays in his game this past weekend where he absolutely laid players out, making huge hits where you could hear the pad pop noise. That’s exactly what the Sooners are expecting to get from the 6-foot, 180-pound safety when he gets on campus next year.
Scott chose OU over Auburn and Florida, and it says a lot
Scott is a top-200 player in the country, the No. 17 safety nationally, and the No. 12 player in the state of Alabama. The Sooners badly wanted him, and he ended up choosing Oklahoma over Auburn and Florida. He even took six visits to Auburn with only three to Oklahoma, so the feeling was clearly mutual. He wanted the Sooners just as much as they wanted him.
This is going to be a huge get for Oklahoma because the staff believes Scott is actually better than his four-star rating suggests. He’s an 89.99-rated composite player on Rivals’ industry rankings, but OU thinks he could be even better than that. And we all know the Sooners have hit the nail on the head the last few years when it comes to recruiting in the secondary. It hasn’t been exclusively four-stars and five-stars, either. Look at a guy like Courtland Guillory, who started last season as a true freshman three-star recruit.
Scott’s frame and physicality are trending in the right direction
Scott has the potential to be a starter for the Sooners defense. Maybe not as a true freshman, but eventually. He has all the tools to be a productive player at the next level, and we saw that even more on display this past weekend. He definitely looks like he’s put on quite a bit of muscle, and his frame has built out even more.
That was one of the downsides coming into this season, so it’s encouraging to see the progress. Playing the safety position and being as downhill as he projects to be, he’s going to need to be strong and physical. He showed this past weekend that he can do exactly that. The Sooners have to be excited with what they saw from Jaylen Scott.
