After what we saw from the Week 1 college football slate this past weekend, Trinidad Chambliss is your Heisman front-runner. No one else.

We just watched cinema in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, and I need to talk about it. Louisville versus Ole Miss was peak college football, and as basic as the saying can be, this was a tale of two very different halves.

The first half had questions, the second half had answers

About as different as two halves could get. In the first half, you had people questioning whether Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy could backpack this Ole Miss offense without Lane Kiffin, without Charlie Weis Jr. Louisville looked like they were going through some growing pains of their own.

Then the second half hit, and it was an absolute avalanche of offensive production. It was 50-yard touchdown after 50-yard touchdown, explosive play after explosive play. It was absolute cinema to watch live. But my gracious, those defenses got exposed.

Kewan Lacy’s injury changed the game plan and forced Trinidad Chambliss to step up

Now here’s where it gets fascinating. Because of the Kewan Lacy leg injury and him being sidelined for the majority of the second half, it put more of a reliance on Chambliss to pass the football. That forced Ole Miss to be more aggressive pushing the ball downfield, and they found something they liked a lot. They were testing that Louisville secondary time and time again, and it kept working.

I have to give credit to Louisville. They pushed this Ole Miss team to the very limit. It took a game-winning field goal for the Rebels to survive. That’s not a blowout. That’s not a comfortable win. That’s a team that was in a dogfight and needed its best player to drag them across the finish line. And he was able to do it.

The Heisman race starts and ends with Chambliss after Week 1

And that’s why he’s your Heisman front-runner right there. I don’t want to hear a single name mentioned until someone puts together a better performance, or a stretch of performances better than what Trinidad Chambliss just pulled off.

To be clear, I don’t feel good about Ole Miss as a team going forward. But Trinidad Chambliss, at any given moment, if he’s your quarterback, he’s basically Steph Curry. He could go scorched earth mode any given game.

The team around him has question marks, the coaching staff is in transition, and the defense looked vulnerable for long stretches of that second half. None of that matters when your quarterback can single-handedly flip a game on its head like he did on Sunday.
